Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Stayed by Delhi HC, Remains in Jail Pending Further Order

Arvind Kejriwal will remain in custody for the time being, as the Delhi High Court has deferred his bail release until a final decision is issued.

Today, the Delhi High Court announced it would require two to three days to deliver its verdict on the Enforcement Directorate’s appeal for a stay.

The High Court put a hold on a previous ruling from a lower court in Delhi, which had approved bail for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pending its final decision. The Enforcement Directorate approached the High Court on the same day to request a suspension of the bail order issued by the Rouse Avenue Court the day before.

The ED contended that the initial ruling granting bail was erroneous, arguing that they were not given sufficient time to contest Kejriwal’s release on bail.

Today, the Delhi High Court announced it would need approximately two to three days to issue a ruling on the Enforcement Directorate’s application for a stay.

The Additional Solicitor General, SV Raju, representing the Enforcement Directorate, criticized the trial court’s decision to bail Kejriwal during Friday’s proceedings, calling it flawed and citing significant procedural mistakes.

The High Court has requested that the legal representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party leader submit their written arguments concerning the Enforcement Directorate’s challenge to the Rouse Avenue Court’s ruling. The final decision is anticipated to be delivered by either Monday or Tuesday.

In March, the Enforcement Directorate detained Arvind Kejriwal due to accusations of money laundering connected to the formulation of the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy.

The Rouse Avenue Court, on Thursday, approved Kejriwal’s bail on the condition that he posts a personal bond worth Rs 1 lakh. His release conditions included a prohibition against participating in the investigation or attempting to influence any witnesses relevant to the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into money laundering. Additionally, Kejrirwal was required to make necessary court appearances and cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.
