PM Modi Visits Italy for G7 Summit: Insights on His First Foreign Visit Following His Third Re-Election.

PM Modi Before his departure to Italy, pressed his gratitude for the invitation to the G7 summit, which marks his first international trip in his third consecutive term. After being re-elected, Prime Minister Modi is attending the G summit in Italy, where he plans to hold discussions and meet with several other global leaders during the event.

The Prime Minister confirmed his attendance at the summit through X, stating, “I am eager to engage in meaningful discussions with global leaders. Our collective goal is to tackle worldwide issues and promote international collaboration for a better future.”

Before leaving for Italy, PM Modi stated that he was “grateful” for his first foreign visit in his third straight term as he was to Italy country for an invitation to the G7 Summit

PM Modi at the G7 Summit: Anticipations and Insights?

• During the G7 summit’s outreach session, PM Modi emphasized India’s priorities, including artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean, particularly addressing critical issues relevant to the Global South.

• Last September, India hosted the G20 Summit in Delhi, attended by leaders from the Apulia meeting under Italy’s presidency. On Friday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni welcome PM Modi as Italy’s Council of Ministers President.

• Italy, currently presiding over the G7, is organizing the summit for major advanced economies such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, the US, and the European Union.

• India was invited by Italy to join the summit as an outreach country, marking PM Modi’s fifth consecutive appearance and India’s tenth participation overall in the G7 summits.

• PM Modi is scheduled for a bilateral discussion with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and is anticipated to meet US President Joe Biden during the summit, according to US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

• The summit will extensively address the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participating. India advocates dialogue and diplomacy, while leaders like Sunak urge strong support for Ukraine.

• Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted PM Modi’s stress on peaceful resolutions, indicating India’s commitment to sharing its viewpoint with global leaders during the summit.

• In her opening remarks to G7 leaders on Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Meloni emphasized southern Italy as the summit location to send a significant message to the Global South.

G7 leaders attending Thursday’s meeting included UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Charles Michel.

• Along India, Italy has extended invitations to leaders from 11 developing nations across Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region to join the G7 Summit.
