Poland is set to embark on a monumental £7bn endeavor, constructing the largest airport project in Europe. This ambitious undertaking will undoubtedly redefine transportation infrastructure on the contine.
Centralny Port Komunikacyjny airport is often referred to as a pivotal element in the revamping of transportation in Europe. It aims to accommodate a staggering 100 million passengers every year.
Poland has initiated the construction of a colossal £7 billion airport, which is set to become the largest transportation endeavor in Europe.
The initiative, known as the Solidarity Transport Hub or the Central Communication Port, entails the revitalization of the urban transportation systems, including the construction of a brand new airport from the ground up.Though it has not yet had full construction permissions but work has started on the site 40km (25 miles) west of Warsaw.
The initial stage of the airport project will include two runways and a terminal capable of accommodating up to 40 million travelers per year. This phase is scheduled to be finished by 2028. Subsequently, there are plans to construct two additional runways that will cater to a total of 100 million passengers annually.
The capital’s upcoming airport development is slated to be constructed approximately 25 miles in a southwestern direction. Boasting two runways, terminal structures, retail establishments, parking facilities, and interconnected roadways, this ambitious project aims to enhance regional connectivity.
The central point will connect air, land, and rail transportation over a region spanning around 3,000 hectares.
Poland is set to implement a fresh railway system, featuring 10 main corridors that will greatly reduce travel times. The ambitious project will involve the construction of 1,119 miles of new high-speed railway lines, along with the modernization of 1,491 miles of existing tracks. The upcoming railway network will consist of these 10 major corridors, forming a new controlled-access highway network connection. This development will substantially decrease travel durations between Warsaw and its neighboring regions.
According to New Civil Engineer, Polish president Andrzej Duda described the undertaking as “one of the crucial initiatives that Poland is currently implementing in the 21st century.”
Furthermore, there are plans underway to establish a fast and efficient link to Frankfurt, Germany, which will greatly enhance international travel and reduce the dependence on air transportation.
According to the information provided on the website, the CPK railway system will be built on approximately 2000 km of newly constructed high-speed rail (HSR) lines, as well as 3700 km of upgraded existing railway lines. The completion of the CPK railway program is considered to be one of the largest ongoing engineering endeavors in Central Europe.
The airport construction commenced in October 2023, but the initial stage is projected to conclude by the conclusion of 2027, along with certain portions of the railway tracks.

The construction of the CPK is driven by the limitation of capacity at Warsaw Chopin Airport, where the maximum passenger count is capped at 20 million.
The objective of the high-speed rail network, known as the railway component, is to facilitate quick transportation to the CPK airport, allowing travelers to reach their destination in a short amount of time. This includes providing a 15-minute travel option from Warsaw.
The primary purpose of this initiative is to offer direct railway access to the airport for 13 million Polish citizens residing in 120 different cities.
